Porins And Aquaporins

Aquaporins, also called water channels, are channel proteins from a larger family of major intrinsic proteins that form pores in the membrane of biological cells, mainly facilitating transport of water between cells. the cell membranes of a variety of different bacteria, fungi, animal and plant cells contain aquaporins through which water can flow more rapidly into and out of the cell than by diffusing through the phospholipid bilayer. aquaporins have six membrane-spanning alpha helical domains. Porins. aquaporins. any of a class of proteins whose molecules can form channels through cellular membranes. aquaporins are proteins embedded in the cell membrane that regulate the flow of water. these are known as beta barrel protein. they are “the plumbing system for cells.” they act as a pore through which molecules can diffuse.

Porins are proteins that act as a pore through which molecules pass through cellular membrane. these are present in the outer membrane of bacteria, mitochondria nad chloroplast. aquaporins are protein molecules embedded in the cell membrane which allows the flow of water molecules. these are found in the cell membrane of plant and animal cells.. Porins are beta barrel proteins that cross a cellular membrane and act as a pore, through which molecules can diffuse. unlike other membrane transport proteins, porins are large enough to allow passive diffusion, i.e., they act as channels that are specific to different types of molecules. they are present in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive mycobacteria.
